LAKE ORTA is located in Piedmont, to the west of celebrated lake Maggiore. The largest town located on this lake is Omegna, in the past the heart of an important industrial district with firms specialising in kitchen appliances, coffee makers, casseroles, kitchen utensils and gadgets. Other interesting little towns on lake Orta are Pettenasco, Pella and Orta San Giulio, pearl of lake Orta.

The village of Orta San Giulio preserves a late middle-age structure and a charm that attracts and impresses visitors. The village centre is traffic-free and hides beautiful frescoed buildings and medieval lanes. Just a short boat ride from the main square is the must-see island of San Giulio where visitors find a 11th-century basilica and a Benedectine Abbey where many cloistered nuns live. On top of the hill behind the village lies the Sacro Monte of St. Francis, an important Unesco site including 20 chapels all Painted and decorated with terracotta statues. The Sacred Mount can easily be reached by car.
