Macugnaga and Mount Rosa in the Alps
After a pleasant journey, really scenic, we will reach this lovely alpine village, still genuine and unspoilt, at the foot of a colossal mountain, Monte Rosa - Mount Rosa - the second highest peak in the Alps.
We will first be driving through the lower part of Ossola (the northern end of Piedmont region) before making our way through the mountain valley at the end of which the village of Macugnaga is located. In the old part of the village the traditional oven that was used centuries ago to bake bread is still visible just like a group of traditional wooden houses / chalets. A visit to the gold mine museum accompanied by a museum guide/ attendant can be really interesting. In this gold mine gold was extracted until the 1960s.
In summer it is possible to enjoy a cable car trip (enclosed) and get to 3 000 meters (10 000 feet) and see Switzerland down the other side. Otherwise a chairlift trip (open) is also a good option to get to the lower part of Mount Rosa (2 000 meters / 6 000 feet) and see a huge glacier there. Several bars and restaurants for a snack / lunch are available.
